What Are Metal Braces?

Metal braces are the traditional gold standard in orthodontic treatment for correcting more severe issues like crooked teeth, overcrowding, large gaps and bite problems. Metal brackets are bonded to the teeth and an archwire runs through the brackets, exerting significant force to shift the teeth into the correct position.

Throughout your orthodontic treatment, you will need to attend routine appointments to get your braces tightened. You also have the option of selecting the color of your bands and brackets, whether you would like something colorful or more transparent.

Contact us at South OC Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics today to schedule a consultation with Dr. John Delorme.

What to Expect At Your Braces Appointment

Consultation

Dr. Delorme will need to see you for a consultation to perform an oral exam and determine the severity of your orthodontic alignment. X-rays may also be taken.

Cleaning

Wearing braces can make keeping your teeth clean more difficult so it’s important to get a dental cleaning before the braces are bonded to your teeth so you have a completely fresh surface before you wear your braces.

Impressions

An outside dental lab will create a customized mold for your braces based on physical or digital impressions taken of your teeth.

Bonding Brackets

After drying and etching your teeth, brackets will be placed over your teeth and bonded into place. The bonding agent will harden when exposed to UV light.

Archwire & Bands

After the bands are in place, we will run an archwire through the bands and elastic bands will hold them in place.

Follow-Up Appointments

About every 4 to 8 weeks, you will return for routine checkups, to tighten your braces and replace the archwire. At the end of your treatment, the braces will be removed and we will remove any excess bonding material and polish your teeth.

FAQs

Benefits of Metal Braces

Metal braces are fixed to your teeth so they are not removable but they are much more effective at correcting severe malocclusions in a shorter timeframe compared to other newer orthodontic treatments like ceramic braces or clear aligners.

Severe malocclusions often cannot be treated by clear aligners, which are only meant to correct very minor cosmetic orthodontic problems. Metal braces, however, can completely transform your smile by closing large gaps and correcting severe overbites.

Metal braces can perform more complex tooth movements like intrusion and extrusion or rotate the teeth. Most patients only need to wear braces for about a year. They’re also much more affordable than more discreet options and are more likely to be covered by insurance.

Because braces are made of stainless steel or titanium, which are very strong and durable materials, metal braces are built to last longer than any other orthodontic treatment and typically do not require replacement unless you suffer from severe dental trauma.

What are the signs of an infection after a wisdom tooth extraction?

If an infection of the incision occurs, it’s a dental emergency and you need to contact an emergency unit. Common symptoms include: bad smell, swelling of the gums, puss coming out of the area, fever, pain that is not relieved by medication.

What can I eat after a wisdom tooth extraction?

It’s recommended to stay away from spicy food, hard foods, seeds or foods with small bits that might get stuck in the incision area. Eat cooler, softer foods like ice cream, fruit puree, soups, pasta, boiled and mashed vegetables etc.
