What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a modern orthodontic treatment that uses clear plastic aligners to straighten the teeth as an alternative to traditional metal braces. This makes orthodontic treatment more comfortable, hygienic, and discreet.

Some of the most common complaints of metal braces are that they are painful or uncomfortable because metal wires and brackets are pressing against the teeth 24/7. Invisalign cushions your teeth with thermoplastic which can be removed up to 2 hours per day.

The aligners also exert much gentler force to gradually move the teeth. Patients also prefer the ability to remove their orthodontics to eat what they want and thoroughly clean their teeth. Since braces can’t be removed, patients face many diet restrictions and cannot clean all of the surfaces of their teeth, often leading to discoloration by the end of treatment.

What Can Invisalign Treat?

Invisalign can correct most minor to moderate orthodontic problems, including gaps, crooked teeth, overcrowding, and bite problems. Thanks to the help of Invisalign attachments and elastics, this clear aligner treatment is well-equipped to handle more severe malocclusions that it was previously unable to.

These buttons that are bonded to your teeth anchor the aligners so that they can perform more complex tooth movements that wouldn’t be possible with the aligners alone. When paired with elastics, these can shift the jaws forward or backward as needed.

However, Invisalign is still best able to correct minor and cosmetic issues with your tooth alignment. If you have very severe bite problems or large gaps, these are best treated with regular braces.

What to Expect At Your Braces Appointment

Dr. Delorme will assess your tooth alignment and oral health to determine if Invisalign is right for you.

The process begins with digital impressions that are taken of your teeth and sent to the Invisalign lab. They will use these to fabricate custom-made aligners for you.

Digital Planning

Once we’ve taken x-rays, impressions, and photographs of your teeth, our advanced software will enable us to digitally plan your entire treatment. Here, you can see how we will move your teeth and how your alignment will change from now to the end of treatment.

Wear Your Aligners

After a few weeks, your aligners will be ready to be picked up at our office. You will begin wearing them for 22 hours per day and will change them out every 2 weeks.

Regular Check-Ups

We will call you back for routine checkups about every 6 weeks. During these appointments, we will check on your alignment progress to ensure your treatment is on track. You can ask us any questions you have during this time.

At the end of treatment, when the desired alignment is achieved, you will need to wear a retainer to maintain this new alignment.

What to Expect At Your Braces Appointment

Dr. Delorme will need to see you for a consultation to perform an oral exam and determine the severity of your orthodontic alignment. X-rays may also be taken.

Wearing braces can make keeping your teeth clean more difficult so it’s important to get a dental cleaning before the braces are bonded to your teeth so you have a completely fresh surface before you wear your braces.

An outside dental lab will create a customized mold for your braces based on physical or digital impressions taken of your teeth.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

Treatment can range anywhere from 6 months for very minor issues like small gaps to multiple years for severe bite problems. The average length of treatment takes 12 to 18 months. We can give you a detailed timeline during your consultation. The length of treatment depends on the severity of your orthodontic problems and your consistency in wearing your aligners for 22 hours per day.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

Anyone who is in good oral health and who wants to correct minor to moderate orthodontic issues without traditional braces is a great candidate for Invisalign.
