Protecting Healthy Smile Development

Pediatric Tooth Extractions in Mission Viejo, CA

Sometimes removing a tooth is the best way to protect your child’s smile and support proper development. At South OC Pediatric Dentistry, extractions are recommended when a tooth cannot be predictably restored or when keeping it may interfere with healthy eruption and spacing.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Recommended?

A tooth extraction may be the best next step when keeping the tooth could affect comfort, surrounding teeth, or how the smile develops.

We may recommend an extraction when:

  • Severe tooth decay that cannot be predictably restored
  • Infection or an abscess threatens surrounding teeth or bone
  • A baby tooth is blocking a permanent tooth from erupting
  • Overcrowding is affecting how adult teeth are coming in
  • Dental trauma has damaged the tooth beyond repair
  • A deeper infection extends beyond what pulpotomy or pulpectomy can predictably treat

Supporting Healthy Smile Development After an Extraction

Even though baby teeth eventually fall out, they play an important role in guiding adult teeth into place. When a tooth needs to be removed early, we carefully monitor how the surrounding teeth are developing.

In some cases, we may recommend a space maintainer to help preserve the room needed for the permanent tooth and support healthy alignment as your child grows.

What to Expect During the Appointment

Before the extraction, we review the procedure and answer any questions. Our team focuses on gentle care and a calm, supportive experience throughout the visit.

During the visit, we:

  1. Administer sedation if needed
  2. Numb the area with local anesthetic
  3. Carefully loosen and remove the tooth
  4. Place gauze to help the area heal
  5. Review aftercare instructions with you and your child
  6. Discuss whether space maintenance or follow-up monitoring is needed

We also guide you through what to expect at home so healing is straightforward and low stress. For easy meal ideas during recovery, download our printable PDF: 30 Soft Foods to Eat After a Pediatric Tooth Extraction.

Sedation and Comfort Options

Most children do very well without sedation. For children who may benefit from additional comfort support, nitrous oxide is available in-office for extractions and can help the visit feel more relaxed.

For more involved cases or children with significant anxiety, treatment may also be coordinated through MobiSurg Surgery Center for sedation when appropriate.

Every recommendation is based on safety, comfort, and what best supports a positive treatment experience.

Experienced Pediatric Specialists You Can Trust

Your child’s care is provided by board-certified pediatric dentists with advanced hospital-based training. Dr. John De Lorme and Dr. Sam Wu both completed their pediatric dental residencies at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Boston Children’s Hospital, where they received extensive training in treating infants, children, and patients with complex dental needs.

This advanced training supports a conservative, thoughtful approach to care, with a focus on safety, comfort, and long-term development.

Supporting Long-Term Development After Extraction

Removing a tooth is never the first option. Our first goal is always to preserve and protect the tooth whenever possible through preventive and restorative dental care.

When an extraction is the healthiest long-term choice, we focus on protecting spacing, monitoring eruption, and helping the rest of the smile continue to develop normally.

Regular dental visits allow us to track healing and make sure adult teeth stay on the right path as they come in.

Insurance

We are in-network with Aetna and Cigna and will gladly bill your insurance and help you maximize your benefits.

FAQs

When can my child return to school after a tooth extraction?

Most children can return to school the next day. If sedation was used or the extraction was more involved, a little extra rest may be recommended.

Is tooth extraction painful for children?

The area is numbed during the procedure, so your child should not feel pain. Mild soreness afterward is normal and usually improves quickly with simple home care.

What can my child eat after a tooth extraction?

Soft foods are best for the first day or two, such as yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and pasta.

How long does healing take after a pediatric tooth extraction?

Initial healing usually takes a few days, with the area continuing to improve over one to two weeks depending on the tooth and your child’s healing response.

Will my child need a space maintainer after an extraction?

Sometimes. If a baby tooth is removed early and the permanent tooth is not close to erupting, a space maintainer may help preserve room for healthy alignment.
