Invisalign® FAQs

Invisalign treatment comes with plenty of questions, from what you can eat and drink to cleaning your aligners, wearing your trays, and knowing what to expect throughout treatment. Below, we answer some of the most common questions about Invisalign.

Can I eat with Invisalign in?

No. Aligners should be removed for meals and snacks to prevent damage, staining, and trapped food around the teeth.

Can I drink coffee or soda with Invisalign?

Hot coffee can warp the aligners, and darker or sugary drinks can stain them or increase the risk of trapping sugar against the teeth. It is best to remove the trays for anything other than water.

How do I clean Invisalign trays?

Clean your Invisalign trays every day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mild clear soap or denture cleanser. Avoid using toothpaste, which can scratch the plastic, and always rinse the trays well before putting them back in.

How do you use Invisalign cleaning crystals?

Dissolve the Invisalign cleaning crystals in a cup of warm water and place your aligners in the solution for about 15 minutes. After soaking, gently brush the trays with a soft toothbrush, rinse them well, and place them back in your mouth.

Will Invisalign affect speech?

Some patients notice a slight lisp for the first few days, but most people adjust quickly and speech returns to normal.

What are Invisalign attachments?

Attachments are small tooth-colored shapes bonded to certain teeth in some cases. They help the aligners grip the teeth better and guide more precise movement.

What happens if I lose an Invisalign tray?

Call your orthodontist as soon as possible. Depending on where you are in treatment, the best next step may be wearing the previous tray, moving to the next tray, or ordering a replacement.

Can Invisalign fix an overbite?

Invisalign can often improve mild to moderate overbites, depending on the position of the teeth and the complexity of the bite. Some cases may require braces or other orthodontic treatment for better correction.

Is Invisalign better than braces?

It depends on the case and the patient’s lifestyle. Invisalign offers more flexibility and easier brushing, while braces may be better for certain complex movements or patients who may not wear removable trays consistently.

Is Invisalign faster than braces?

In some cases, Invisalign can be faster than braces, but treatment time depends on how much tooth movement is needed and how consistently the aligners are worn. For more complex cases, braces may be the better option for more precise control and long-term result.

Will I have to wear a retainer after my treatment is done?

After Invisalign treatment, you will need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their new position and prevent them from shifting back. Most patients wear their retainer full time at first, then switch to wearing it at night long term to maintain the final result.

What happens if I forget to wear my trays?

Missing wear time can slow progress and may cause the next tray not to fit properly. In some cases, this can lead to extra aligners or refinements.

How long does Invisalign usually take?

Many Invisalign cases are completed in about 12 months, though treatment time varies based on bite complexity, consistency, and how much movement is needed.
