Cavities are a common concern for parents when it comes to their children’s dental health. Dental sealants are an effective preventive measure that can significantly reduce the risk of cavities in young patients. At South OC Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics in Mission Viejo, CA, we prioritize the long-term oral health of your children. Below, we explore the benefits of dental sealants and how they can help prevent cavities.
The thin, protective coating is applied in layers to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). These areas are susceptible to cavities because their grooves and pits can trap food particles and bacteria. The sealant material, typically made from plastic resin, forms a barrier that prevents these substances from settling into the tooth and causing decay.
Sealants apply a smooth, protective layer to the tooth’s vulnerable areas. This barrier blocks out plaque and food particles, reducing the risk of cavities. Studies have shown that sealants can reduce the risk of decay in molars by nearly 80%, making them an excellent preventive tool in pediatric dental care.
Sealants are especially beneficial for young kids and teenagers at higher risk of developing cavities. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends applying sealants when children’s permanent molars emerge, typically around ages 6 and 12. However, younger children with deep grooves in their primary (baby) teeth or adults particularly susceptible to cavities can also benefit from sealants.
Applying dental sealants is a fast, pain-free procedure. Here’s what you can expect during the application:
Dental sealants have advantages that go beyond preventing cavities:
While sealants are highly effective, they are not a substitute for good oral hygiene practices. Children should continue brushing their teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and maintain regular dental visits. A balanced diet and limiting sugary snacks and drinks also contribute to better oral health and longevity of the sealants.
