Caring for baby teeth is crucial to ensuring your child’s overall health and well-being. At South OC Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics in Mission Viejo, CA, we understand the importance of early dental care. We are committed to helping your child maintain a healthy and happy smile. Below, we answer some frequently asked questions about dental care for baby teeth to help you navigate this important aspect of your child’s health.
Baby teeth, also known as primary teeth, play several important roles despite being temporary. They help your child chew food properly, develop clear speech, and maintain space for permanent teeth. Healthy baby teeth also contribute to the proper alignment and spacing of future adult teeth.
When your baby’s first tooth erupts, usually around six months, you should start brushing their teeth. To gently clean the teeth and gums, use a little soft-bristled toothbrush and a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice).
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the first dental visit should occur by the time a child turns one year old or within six months of the emergence of their first tooth. After the initial visit, regular check-ups every six months are recommended to monitor dental health and catch any potential issues early.
Preventing tooth decay involves maintaining good oral hygiene and a healthy diet. Brush your child’s teeth twice daily, ensure they drink plenty of water, and limit sugary snacks and drinks. It’s also important to avoid putting your baby to bed with a bottle, as prolonged exposure to milk or juice can lead to cavities.
If your child complains of having a toothache, gently floss the area around the affected tooth to remove any food particles that may have become lodged there, and rinse their mouth with warm water. Avoid giving them aspirin, as it can damage the gums. Schedule an appointment with your pediatric dentist as soon as possible to identify and treat the cause of the pain.
Dental X-rays are safe for young children when proper precautions are taken. We use the latest technology to minimize radiation exposure. Dental X-rays are an essential diagnostic tool that helps us detect cavities, monitor tooth development, and plan orthodontic treatment.
To help your child feel at ease during dental visits, start dental care early to make it a routine part of their life. Be optimistic about dental visits and explain what to expect in simple terms. Our South OC Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics team is experienced in working with children and creating a friendly, welcoming environment to make their visit as comfortable as possible.
